In the 1940s, a chef at Buddy's Rendezvous Pizzeria in Detroit baked pizza dough in a steel pan borrowed from a nearby car factory, and it was an instant hit. To make an authentic version, get a Detroit-style pizza pan: It gives the pie its signature shape and unmistakably crunchy crust.
