Somewhere between apple bread and a warm bread pudding, this applesauce spoonbread is the kind of dessert made for chilly fall weekends. It starts on the stovetop with homemade applesauce—great for when you have a lot of apples to use up—before the rest of the ingredients are stirred right into the same pot. The spoonbread bakes up moist and custardy and is best scooped warm into bowls. There are little pockets of tender apples and dulce de leche throughout, plus a buttery almond crumb topping for some crunch. Finish with a dusting of confectioners' sugar and a highly recommended scoop of vanilla ice cream.
